Adif is commencing the necessary tests to bring an upgrade to the ERTMS traffic control system up to its highest standard, Level 2, on several of Spain’s main high-speed corridors. The project affects the lines linking Madrid with Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Extremadura, which will join the sections already using this technology, with the aim of completing its roll-out over the course of this winter.
The ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) is the European system for managing and controlling rail traffic. Level 2 enables continuous monitoring of trains via radio communication, as opposed to Level 1, which transmits information at specific intervals via beacons. As well as enhancing speed and braking control, Level 2 allows for shorter intervals between trains and increases line capacity. This move by the rail operator is particularly significant given the severe strain on the high-speed network caused by the growth in services following liberalisation, a series of incidents and constraints due to ongoing construction work.
