Madrid’s Municipal Transport Company (EMT) has joined the World Infrastructure Forum (WIF) as an institutional partner — the global infrastructure cooperation platform founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the World Bank, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and the University of Texas at Austin.
The agreement was signed this Friday, 19 June, at the UPM School of Civil Engineering (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos), a venue linked to the forum, in a ceremony signed by José Miguel Atienza, managing trustee of the Fundación Agustín de Betancourt — the organisation behind the WIF — and Borja Carabante, chairman of the EMT Board of Directors.
A global network for infrastructure and mobility
With this addition, the EMT joins the network of public institutions, international bodies and private-sector organisations taking part in the WIF to jointly address the planning, financing and management of infrastructure and urban mobility. The forum also works on emerging areas such as infrastructure digitalisation and the development of digital twins applied to the city.
What the World Infrastructure Forum is
The World Infrastructure Forum is a non-profit initiative organised and managed by the Fundación Agustín de Betancourt. It brings together public institutions, multilateral organisations, private entities and the academic community to promote dialogue and international cooperation around the future of infrastructure. It has an Advisory Committee made up of representatives from leading organisations in the sector, which guides its lines of work.
The role of the EMT
The EMT is the public company under Madrid City Council responsible for the city’s surface public transport: the planning, operation and delivery of the urban bus service. Its incorporation into the forum is part of its work on sustainable mobility and on improving the efficiency of urban transport.
The signing took place at the UPM School of Civil Engineering, one of the four founding institutions of the WIF.
