Iberdrola begins generating electricity at Windanker, its third offshore wind farm in Germany

Iberdrola has begun supplying electricity to the German grid from the first wind turbines at Windanker, its 315-megawatt (MW) offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The project, representing an investment of over 1,000 million euros, is expected to reach full commercial operation in the final quarter of 2026.

The electricity is being fed into the grid via the new Ostwind 3 offshore connection, operated by 50Hertz, following the completion of commissioning tests. The system includes the Jasmund platform, nearly 100 kilometres of subsea and onshore cables, and the new Stilow substation, near Greifswald. Some of the installed wind turbines are already using this infrastructure to supply electricity to the grid.

Windanker will comprise 21 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each with a capacity of up to 15 MW. The SG 14-236 DD model turbines feature a rotor with a diameter of 236 metres and direct-drive technology. According to estimates provided by the energy company chaired by Ignacio Galán, the wind farm will be able to generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of around 600,000 people.

Most of the output is backed by long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with industrial customers in Germany. These agreements provide revenue certainty for the project and ensure a renewable supply for its buyers.
